Log from the Debian Installer team meeting of November 11th 2008, 21:00UTC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
People who speak below:
otavio : Otavio Salvador
fjp : Frans Pop
bubulle : Christian Perrier
tbm : Martin Michlmayr
franklin : Franklin Piat
Hours are European Time (UTC +0100):
22:00 * otavio is around
22:04 * bubulle is around (nearly forgot...)
22:04 < bubulle> otavio: I have the errata, the announcement and the website index.wml files ready (but not tested)
22:06 < franklin> Hi (again)
22:06 < otavio> bubulle: did you try to compile the website?
22:06 < bubulle> otavio: not really, sorry
22:06 < otavio> bubulle: want me todo that?
22:06 < bubulle> mostly because I never did that before
22:06 < bubulle> yep
22:07 < otavio> bubulle: or want me to help you to get used to it?
22:07 < bubulle> I can't commit in the website cvs, so you need to commit yourself
22:07 < bubulle> well, as for today, I prefer sending you the files.;:)
22:08 < otavio> bubulle: could you instead send me a diff? It is better for me since I can only apply them and try it
22:12 < bubulle> otavio: sent
22:13 < bubulle> so, I think we found ne real blocker. The testing was even much wider than I would have imagined, thanks to franklin
22:13 < bubulle> otavio: imho, it's OK to release now
22:13 < otavio> bubulle: yes, he had done a wonderful job.
22:14 < otavio> bubulle: we can but we'll not have the fixed tasksel used in this case
22:14 < franklin> I've sent a patch for multiarch CD. it uses a new feature to detect the CPU. we need to have it in RC1 IMHO.
22:14 < otavio> franklin: we can't. This require a full d-i build and it would take us a week more
22:15 < otavio> franklin: it will be in RC2
22:15 < franklin> ack
22:15 < otavio> bubulle: but I believe it won't hurt to get a full CD rebuild with fixed tasksel
22:15 < otavio> bubulle: what do you think?
22:16 < otavio> bubulle: however manual won't be included anyway; since it has not been released
22:17 < bubulle> otavio: well, then wait for the manual, no? I think fjp had hard times figuring out when the release would come so it would be quite rude to him to release without a manual
22:17 < bubulle> but, /me is not skilled enough in the release process to really know if what 4m saying makes sense
22:18 < otavio> bubulle: I'd be OK to wait for it; no problem for me
22:18 * fjp would not even build new CDs, but that's just me.
22:18 < bubulle> well, depends if we judge that the new tasksel is absolutely needed
22:19 < fjp> Current testing is nice, but delaying the release is totally pointless.
22:19 < fjp> It's not.
22:19 < bubulle> but I agree that I don't feel an urgent need for it
22:19 < bubulle> so, maybe it's better to release without rebuilding, then
22:19 < bubulle> after all, the new tasksel will come in RC2? no?
22:19 < fjp> For manual you'd have to wait for it to migrate to testing.
22:20 < bubulle> fjp: does that mean that RC1 has to wait for that or did already D-I releases come before the manual is in testing, in the past?
22:20 < otavio> Yes. It will be in RC2
22:20 < bubulle> (horrible en_FR, I hope you got my point)
22:21 < fjp> Just add a note in announcement/errata that manual included on CDs is outdated and to use the manual on the webservers instead.
22:21 < bubulle> makes sens
22:21 < bubulle> e
22:21 < otavio> If we won't wait manual we can release it now
22:21 < otavio> I agree with it all too
22:21 < franklin> It's worth mentioning in the release announcement that the image are (8) days old, [because they have laready revceived some pre-test...]. so people aren't diapointed when they see that the iamges are (8) days old.
22:21 < bubulle> franklin: I'm not sure it's worth it, indeed
22:21 < fjp> IMO that's just confusing.
22:22 < fjp> And there will ne new weeklies in a few days anyway.
22:22 < otavio> bubulle: mind to update the errata with Frans suggestion?
22:23 < bubulle> fjp: is the manual on CD's "slightly" outdated or quite old?
22:24 < fjp> The webservers will be updated very shortly after I upload: http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/installmanual
22:24 < fjp> bubulle: it's beta2
22:25 < otavio> it is not quite old, but mosty out to date ... mostly because beta2 -> rc1 it had massive rework ...
22:25 < bubulle>
Outdated Installation Manual on installation media
22:25 < bubulle>
22:25 < bubulle> The copy of the Installation Manual that's provided on
22:25 < bubulle> installation media is outdated. Users should use
22:25 < bubulle> the updated copy on the website.
22:27 < otavio> s/provided/included/?
22:27 < bubulle> ack
22:27 < fjp> Guide instead of Manual
22:28 < otavio> We suggest to users to use ...
22:28 < otavio> ?
22:28 * bubulle is nof found of 1st person and "users to use".....blah
22:28 < bubulle> fjp: ack
22:29 < otavio> Users are suggested to use
22:29 < bubulle> ack
22:30 < bubulle> ok, apart from all this, anything we need to discuss beffore we give otavio a GO to release?
22:33 < tbm> not from my side
22:34 < fjp> you have more errata
22:34 < bubulle> what we actually have in the errata:
22:34 < bubulle> Outdated Installation Guide on installation media
22:34 < otavio> bubulle: I'm contacting Sledge in #debian-cd to see if he is available to sign the images and move them to the right place.
22:34 < bubulle> Multiarch CD boots the AMD64 installer directly
22:35 < bubulle> Corrupted display of messages in Dzongkha installs
22:35 < bubulle> Fallback languages not used as planned
22:35 < bubulle> Disk devices may change on reboot
22:35 < bubulle> Buggy routers may cause network problems
22:35 < bubulle> Graphical installer:
22:36 < bubulle> oh, I have duplicates there..:-)
22:36 < bubulle> shoult we keep the "touchpads should work, but support may not be optimal" thing?
22:37 < bubulle> i386: no installation from floppy disk
22:37 < otavio> I have not seen it to happen for a while and directfb has improved a lot on it; it could be droped I think. Frans was one of the affected people by this bug IIRC
22:37 < bubulle> >powerpc: various issues:
22:37 < bubulle> - installation from floppy on OldWorld PowerMac is broken
22:37 < bubulle> - the snd-powermac module is no longer loaded by default
22:37 < bubulle> sparc: fails to recognize ESP/FAS SCSI controller
22:38 < bubulle> s390: unsupported features:
22:38 < bubulle> - support for the DASD DIAG discipline is currently not available
22:38 < bubulle> - support for LCS network interfaces is no longer available
22:38 < bubulle> ....that's it
22:40 < bubulle> otavio: just sent you a 2nd version of the diff for the errata
22:41 < bubulle> if we have nothing else, maybe a plan could be drawn for RC2 now?
22:41 < bubulle> assuming that RC1 is now on rails....
22:42 < bubulle> Can we list here what we need to fix/change?
22:42 < bubulle> ...and who will do it..:-)
22:42 < otavio> It's fine for me. I'll just ping Sledge about it and commit the errata, website and announce it in debian-devel-announce
22:42 < fjp> [22:34:11] you have more errata
22:43 < otavio> fjp: what you remember that we haven't include on it?
22:43 < fjp> I suggest you work on it a bit.
22:47 < franklin> Firmware: Regarding the hard disk enumeration problem when someone introduces a usb key during in a netboot-install can we document it (i.e "remove the key"). If I provide a patch to skip asking for wireless firmware during netboot, does it have a change to be applied in Lenny... oh and do you like the idea.
23:06 < bubulle> as of now, I've identified:
23:07 < bubulle> - kernel updates
23:07 < bubulle> - instalaltion guide
23:07 < bubulle> - new tasksel
23:07 < otavio> bubulle: tasksel is done
23:07 < bubulle> - dzongkha display thing (hard to track down...I'm not sure I can do it. david-e maybe)
23:07 < otavio> bubulle: we have cdebconf fallback issue (frans has pointed another issue that needs to go together but I don't have the log available)
23:08 < bubulle> the cdebconf issue was investigated by Lunar, IIRC
23:08 < otavio> bubulle: i'd suggest to put it in release announcement wiki page, in a section called blockers; so we keep all it in a single place
23:08 < bubulle> I don't think that the fallback issue is a blocker, indeed
23:08 < otavio> bubulle: but is not yet finished (i may have the time to look at the c code changes that colin has suggested)
23:09 < otavio> bubulle: for the release, sure not but a nice fix to have
23:09 < bubulle> nor is the dzongkha display problem
23:09 < otavio> bubulle: agreed
23:15 < bubulle> http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/LennyRC2Prep
23:15 < franklin> I have to leave... levave me message here or by email to let me know if I can help.
23:15 < bubulle> franklin: you can
23:15 < bubulle> now or later in D-I development, we need more people
23:15 < bubulle> for instance, we might need people to track down things and stuff like that
23:16 < bubulle> franklin: thanks anyway *a lot* for all the work you did this week-end
23:16 < otavio> franklin: Indeed. You've done an awesome job.
23:16 < bubulle> otavio: I suggest we fill in the wiki page and stick to it
23:16 < otavio> bubulle: this works for me.
23:16 < franklin> you are welcome. See you later
23:17 * bubulle has to leave also. It's late now and I'm awfully tired. I really hope that the atmosphere will be lighter in the next days.
23:17 < bubulle> otavio: keep up with the good work
