Debian 3.0 (woody) for m68k

Debian3.0 (woody) has been released on July 19th, 2002. Please direct install questions to debian-68k. Mac kernel specific questions to linux-mac68k. If the installation fails at some point or the kernel dies with strange error messages, please provide the full text on your display. Even if it's uncomprehensible to you, it might give a clue for others. If possible use dmesg (Amiga users: there is an AmigaOS version on the Debian CD. Append "debug=mem" to your boot line and run dmesg under AOS after a reboot. Please read the readme file.) and send the output to the appropriate list.

Where is the Linux-m68k FAQ?
I have an old Mac, can I install Debian/m68k on it?

I am trying to install Debian on my Mac, but when I start the Penguin I get:

RAMDISK : Compressed image found at block 0
VFS : Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
VFS : Cannot open root device 00:00
Kernel panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

You forgot to add

root=/dev/ram

to the kernel boot options in Penguin.

I want to use another Penguin version for my mac
Get Penguin-17 or Penguin-19. If I find -18, I will put it where the other goodies are.
How do I get sound with my Quadra (name your mac here)?

Known problems

Where are the install files on the CD?
Have a look in:

dists/woody/main/disks-m68k/current

There are no info files, so on Amiga you have to show all files, to find the directories. Hopefully for the next version, everything will be in the install directory again.
StartInstall does not work after I unpacked amigainstall.tar.gz
Do:
```
protect amiboot-5.6 +e
```
in AOS. Somehow the executable flag is interpreted differently in Linux and AOS. If somebody knows how to properly set the executable ("e") from for AOS from Linux, please tell me. dmesg (the AOS program) has to be made executable, too.
bogl: don't know screen type 0 (or 1)
Read about dbootstrap Arguments. Solution: add "nolangchooser" to your boot options.
A StartInstall script on Amiga might look like this:

amiboot-5.6 -d -k linux.bin -r root.bin root=/dev/ram video=amifb:pal nolangchooser

This has been added in boot-floppies 3.0.24.
On a mac, add it to your Penguin config (input needed, no mac here...).
On Atari, any Atari users left? Oh yes, here we go. On Atari you need a very different approach, do NOT add it to your boot options, instead:

On VME... (serial install falls back to nolangchooser automatically?).
/dev/sr[01] (and scd[01]) are missing in the (Amiga, Atari, Mac, VME?) installer
This has been fixed in boot-floppies 3.0.24.
Download the fixed rootamiga.bin, rootmac.bin, rootatari.bin, ... and use that instead of root.bin. Alternatively you could create the missing device files by hand. Switch to the second console (Alt-F2 on Amiga), activate the shell (RETURN) and:

cd /dev ; mknod scd0 b 11 0 ; ln -s scd0 sr0 ; mknod scd1 b 11 1 ; ln -s scd1 sr1
```
Switch back to the installer (Alt-F1 on Amiga).
I can not get XFree86 4.1 to work
Yeah, same here. The module loader bug seems to be fixed, though. I am still trying to get a working config for amifb (my CV3D card has died, if somebody wants to donate me one for testing, you're more than welcome). If you have a working config for any m68k video hardware, please send it to me, so I can include it here.

Old/fixed(?) Known problems

How to install XFree86 4.x on m68k? (fixed? xfree86 4.1.0-16 installs fine for me(TM), though I don't have a working config yet).
(fixed?) Upgrading to libc6 2.2.1-1 does not work (still applies for 2.2.2-1). Install this or this textutils package

dpkg --force-depends -i textutils_2.0-2.0.1_m68k.deb

then install (or dpkg --configure --pending) libc6.
(fixed?) binutils 2.10.91.0.2-4 is broken. More broken than all the previous ones. Use this fixed binutils_2.10.91.0.2-2.deb package.
NB the previously installed -2 deb is also broken, this one is not.
libc6 2.2.4 does not work with 2.4.x kernels. Try glibc-2.2.3 packages or rebuilt glibc-2.2.4 packages.
Update: it seems to work with the latest (kernel) patches, so maybe its not a libc6 problem. xdm is freezing my box now when its run during boot. It works fine, when I start it later...
