What's new in Debian GNU/Linux 3.1

New Debian-Installer

The installation routine has been completely rewritten from scratch. It is now called debian-installer which supersedes the old boot-floppies package. This project was already started before the release of woody (Debian 3.0) but wasn't ready in time. The debian-installer isreleased with sarge for the first time

  • Modular design: all components are available as single packages instead of one large source archive. This helps people maintain the components.
  • Debconf: All user interaction is done through debconf. This allows for several different frontends, e.g.:
  • Graphical installer: It is possible to connect a graphical frontend to the debconf interface and hence use a graphical installer.
  • testing: This is the first release that was prepared through the so called testing distribution, a staging area for the entire distribution
