Ubuntu is a Debian based, community developed Linux distribution sponsored by Canonical. Ubuntu has made more modifications and feature additions on top of Debian than any other Debian derived product so far. Modifications do not stop at the package level, however, Canonical has copied and since expanded and modified the whole Debian organizational infrastructure and created a new community around Ubuntu from scratch. Compared to Debian, Ubuntu takes new approaches in release management, base system development, package maintenance, automatic package building and archiving, package maintainer/community member selection and community steering and management. While some of those changes have been the subject of heated discussions, most of them seem still opaque to most Debian Developers or outsiders. This talk will present the Ubuntu development and community models and lay out their similarities and differences compared to Debian.
