APT has support for translation. This used to be a coordination page.
APT is Debian's package transfer library. Most people know it from it's command line utilities such as apt-get or apt-cache. While the source code is almost completely prepared to allow translations, the final step —activating those translations— has not yet been performed in the officially released versions.
The code is ready and waits to be unleashed upon the masses. It's currently in the unstable distribution.
However, what's missing are some of the translations themselves. These can only be done by native speakers of the respective language. Only under exceptional circumstances should translations be done by non-native speakers. I will collect translations by hand to submit them to APT's CVS.
Download the catalog template, fill in the header – please, then translate each and every, or at least quite a lot, of the messages contained within. Then send the translation to my Debian email address (piefel). All received translations are assumed to be completely free.
Insert your name in the appropriate places. If you update an existing translation, don't ever delete the name of previous translators from the catalog comments, just add yours.
To translate the catalog, every text editor will do. However, as so often, Emacs rules (I've been told). It contains a nice PO mode, you can download a new version here if yours is too old. Of course, Vim is not far behind, its PO filetype plugin is available in Vim's SourceForge script repository, the vim-scripts package or here. There are also specialized programs like poEdit, gtranslator or KBabel.
Below is a table with the translations that we already got as an overview. The table is sorted by language code. You should download all of these files and the source where the messages originate directly from CVS (root is :pserver:anonymous@cvs.debian.org:/cvs/deity, project is apt).
There are 456 messages to be translated.
