<p>Willkommen zu der 4. Ausgabe der DWN in diesem Jahr, dem wöchentlichen
Newsletter der Debian-Gemeinschaft. Marc Haber gab experimentelle, gegen
db4.2 gelinkte

bekannt</a>, die später in Sarge/Sid eingehen sollen. OSNews zeigt einen
<a href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9271";>Leitfaden</a> von
Luis Lima zur Verwendung des neuen
<a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">Debian-Installers</a> zum
Installieren von Debian.

<p><strong>Sarge Veröffentlichungsprozess &ndash; Aktualisierung.</strong>
Steve Langasek schickte eine
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00011.html";>\
Aktualisierung</a> über den Veröffentlichungsprozess für Debian 3.1 ein. Er
berichtete, dass KDE 3.3 zu Sarge hinzugefügt worden sei und dass ein Upload
von einem Portierer für Perl stattgefunden habe, womit die Anzahl der
veröffentlichungskritischen Fehler um ca. 60 Fehler reduziert wurde. Er legte
auch dar, dass bei testing-proposed-updates und testing-security Fortschritt
erzielt worden sei, aber immer noch auf Infrastruktur gewartet werde.

<p><strong>Status-Aktualisierung für das volatile-Archiv.</strong>
Andreas Barth
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00012.html";>\
berichtete</a> über den Status von <a href="http://volatile.debian.net/";>\
debian-volatile</a>. Dieses inoffizielle Archiv ziele auf die Unterstützung
schnell-veränderlicher Pakete wie Spam-Filter, Virenscanner und ähnliches
für stabile Debian-Veröffentlichungen ab. Er und sein Team hätten die
Infrastruktur und die <a href="http://volatile.debian.net/mirrors.html";>\
Spiegel</a> dafür aufgesetzt. Als erstes Paket ist
<a href="http://volatile.debian.net/debian-volatile/pool/main/w/whois/";>\
whois</a> für den debian-volatile-Bereich von Woody akzeptiert worden.
</p>

<p><strong>Binärpakete umbenennen.</strong>  Jay Berkenbilt
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01047.html";>wollte</a>
ein Paket umbenennen, um die Version im Namen loszuwerden. Um dies zu erreichen,
plante er, ein neues Quellpaket zu erstellen und das alte Paket in ein
#HK: transitional package
reines Übergangspaket umzuwandeln.  Anthony Towns
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01061.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass der Name der Bibliothek nicht mit deren Soname übereinstimmen müsse und
dass kein Übergangspaket bereitgestellt werden müsse, wenn die Conflicts-,
Provides- und Replaces-Felder sorgfältig erstellt würden.

<p><strong>Unterstützung für DevFS?</strong> Russell Coker
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01067.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass DevFS in den Kernelquellen als obsolet erachtet werde und im Juli 2005
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01072.html";>entfernt</a>
werde. Allerdings
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01070.html";>basiert</a>
der neue <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">Installer</a> darauf.
Joey Hess
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01129.html";>bestätigte</a>,
dass Debian den Installer nicht durch große Änderungen, wie beispielsweise die
nicht-Verwendung von devFS, destabilisieren werde, bis Sarge veröffentlicht
worden sei.
</p>

<p><strong>Änderung der Architektur eines Paketes.</strong> Jay Berkenbilt
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01049.html";>fragte
sich</a>, ob die Änderung von <code>any</code> zu <code>all</code> in einem
Debian-Paket manuelle Eingriffe erfordere.  Santiago Vila
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01053.html";>versicherte</a>,
#HK: to enter -> erreichen ok?
dass so ein Paket das Archiv sogar schneller erreichen sollte, da es für alle
11 Architekturen »instantan« gebaut werde.
</p>

<p><strong>Debian-Women-IRC-Treffen.</strong> Die Debian-Women-Gruppe
hielt am 16. Januar ein
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-women/2005/01/msg00050.html";>\
IRC-Treffen</a> ab. Das diskutierte Thema war: »Wie werden Zweck und
Ziele des Debian-Women-Projektes am besten denjenigen vermittelt, die
Fragen dazu haben.« Vorm Treffen
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-women/2005/01/msg00093.html";>\
wies</a> Jérémy Bobbio auf die Frage hin, wie IRC-Treffen am besten
organisiert und moderiert würden, im Speziellen wenn Personen anwesend
seien, die Englisch nicht als Muttersprache sprächen. Das Treffen sei
gut besucht gewesen und habe lebendige Diskussionen hervorgerufen.

<p><strong>Unberechtigte Änderungen an Zugriffsrechten.</strong> Otto Wyss
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01124.html";>\
bemerkte</a>, dass die Zugriffsberechtigungen für ein Programm, dem
er den setuid-Marker hinzugefügt hatte, ständig zurückgesetzt würden.
Peter Sammuelson
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01125.html";>trug</a>
den angemessenen <code>dpkg-statoverride</code>-Befehl bei und Maciej Dems
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01155.html";>\
fügte hinzu</a>, dass es besser sei
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/sudo";>sudo</a>zu verwenden.
</p>

<p><strong>Abhängigkeit von einem bestimmten Kernel-Paket.</strong>
Martin Kittel
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01277.html";>\
fragte sich</a>, ob es sinnvoll sei, eine Abhängigkeit zu einem
bestimmten Kernel-Image-Paket zu deklarieren, denn es seien in einer
früheren
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01236.html";>\
Diskussion</a> Argumente vorgebracht worden, dass nicht alle Benutzer
den Debian-Kernel installiert hätten. Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01309.html";>\
erklärte</a>, dass es die Aufgabe einer Abhängigkeit sei, die
Installation eines weiteren Paketes sicherzustellen, so dass die
bereitgestellten Inhalte genutzt werden könnten. Der Kernel sei ein
anders gearteter Fall.

<p><strong>Mozilla-Foundation-Markenzeichen-Vorschlag.</strong>
Gervase Markham von der Mozilla-Foundation
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00503.html";>\
schlug</a> ein Markenzeichenabkommen für die Firebird- und
Thunderbird-Pakete in Debian vor. Walter Landry
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00596.html";>\
wies darauf hin</a>, dass die Menschen außerhalb von Debian die Pakete
immer noch nicht legal modifizieren und weiterverbreiten dürften.
</p>

<p><strong>Aktualisierungen zur Systemsicherheit.</strong> Die alte Leier!

<p>Welcome to this year's 4th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the
Debian community.  Marc Haber <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01327.html";>\
announced</a> experimental packages of <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/exim4";>Exim4</a> linked against db4.2 for
later inclusion in to sarge/sid.  OSNews has a <a
href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9271";>guideline</a> on using the
new <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">debian-installer</a> to install
Debian by Luis Lima.</p>

<p><strong>Sarge Release Progress Update.</strong> Steve Langasek sent in
an <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00011.html";>\
update</a> on the release progress for Debian 3.1. He reported that KDE
3.3 has been added to sarge and a porter upload for perl had taken place, 
which dropped the release critical bug count about 60 bugs. He also
stated that progress in testing-proposed updates and testing-security
has been made but is still waiting for infrastructure.</p>

<p><strong>Status Update for volatile Archive.</strong> Andreas Barth <a 
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00012.html";>\
reported</a> about the status of <a href="http://volatile.debian.net/";>\
debian-volatile</a>.  This unofficial archive aims at supporting fast moving
packages for the stable Debian release like spam filter, virus scanner and the like.
He and his team have set up the infrastructure and 
<a href="http://volatile.debian.net/mirrors.html";>mirrors</a> for it.
A first package, <a 
href="http://volatile.debian.net/debian-volatile/pool/main/w/whois/";>\
whois</a> has been accepted for debian-volatile's section of woody.</p>

<p><strong>Renaming Binary Packages.</strong>  Jay Berkenbilt <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01047.html";>wanted</a>
to rename a package in order to loose the version in the package name.  To
achieve this he planned to create a new source package and convert the old
package into transitional packages only.  Anthony Towns <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01061.html";>explained</a>
that the name of a library name does not have to match its soname and believes
that no transitional packages need to be provided when Conflicts, Provides and
Replaces fields are carefully crafted.</p>

<p><strong>Support for DevFS?</strong> Russell Coker <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01067.html";>stated</a>
that devfs is regarded as obsolete in the kernel source and will be <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01072.html";>removed</a>
in July 2005.  However, the new <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">\
installer</a> is <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01070.html";>based</a> on
it.  Joey Hess <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01129.html";>asserted</a>
that Debian will not destabilise the installer by beginning to make large changes
to it, like not using devfs, until sarge is released.</p>

<p><strong>Changing the Architecture of a Package.</strong> Jay Berkenbilt <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01049.html";>wondered</a>
if the change from <code>any</code> to <code>all</a> in a Debian package would
require manual intervention.  Santiago Vila <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01053.html";>asserted</a>
that such a package could enter the archive even faster, since it is built for
11 architectures "instantly".</p>

<p><strong>Debian Women IRC meeting.</strong> The Debian Women group held an
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-women/2005/01/msg00050.html";>IRC
meeting</a> on January 16th.  The topic discussed
was "How to best convey the purpose and goals of the Debian Women
project to those who have questions about it."  Prior to the meeting, Jérémy
Bobbio <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-women/2005/01/msg00093.html";>\
raised</a> the question of the best way to
organise and moderate IRC meetings, especially when non-native English
speakers are present.  The meeting was well attended and provoked lively
discussions.  <a
href="http://women.alioth.debian.org/wiki/index.php/English/IRC16January2005";>\
Minutes</a> were <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-women/2005/01/msg00093.html";>taken</a> by
Colleen Hatfield.</p>

<p><strong>Spurious Permissions Changes.</strong> Otto Wyss <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01124.html";>noticed</a>
that permissions on a program he added the setuid flag were changed back
permanently.  Peter Sammuelson <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01125.html";>contributed</a>
the proper <code>dpkg-statoverride</code> command and Maciej Dems <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01155.html";>added</a>
that it would be better to use <a href="http://packages.debian.org/sudo";>\
sudo</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Depending on a particular Kernel Package.</strong> Martin Kittel <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01277.html";>wondered</a>
if it is sensible to declare a dependency on a kernel image package since
arguments were raised in a former <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01236.html";>discussion</a>
that not all users have the Debian kernel installed.  Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01309.html";>\
explained</a> that the job of a dependency is to make sure that another
package is installed so its provided content can be used.  The kernel is a
different case.</p>

<p><strong>Mozilla Foundation Trademark Proposal.</strong> Gervase Markham
from the Mozilla Foundation <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00503.html";>proposed</a>
a trademark agreement for Debian Firebird and Thunderbird packages.  Walter
Landry <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00596.html";>\
pointed out</a> that people outside of Debian would still be unable to legally
modify and redistribute packages.</p>

<p><strong>Security Updates.</strong> You know the drill.  Please make sure
that you update your systems if you have any of these packages installed.</p>

<p><strong>Orphaned Packages.</strong> 4 packages were orphaned this week and
require a new maintainer.  This makes a total of 242 orphaned packages.  Many
thanks to the previous maintainers who contributed to the Free Software

the full list, and please add a note to the bug report and retitle it to ITA:
