<p>Willkommen zu der 5. Ausgabe der DWN in diesem Jahr, dem wöchentlichen
Newsletter der Debian-Gemeinschaft. Andreas Schuldei gab <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00014.html";>\
bekannt</a>, dass die <a
href="http://comas.linux-aktivaattori.org/debconf5";>Registration</a> für die
diesjährige Debian-Konferenz geöffnet worden sei.  Og Maciel <a
href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9516";>installierte</a> Debian
zum ersten Mal und dachte, dass der Expertenmodus angemessen sei, in dem er
die Möglichkeit bekam, alle 27 Fragen zu beantworten, von denen nur ein Teil
während einer normalen Installation angezeigt werde.
</p>

<p><strong>Debian-Entwickler-Raum auf der FOSDEM.</strong> Wouter Verhelst 
gab den Vortragsplan für den Debian-Entwickler-Raum auf der diesjährigen
<a href="$(HOME)/events/2005/0226-fosdem">FOSDEM</a>, die Ende Februar
stattfindet, <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/2005/01/msg00064.html";>\
bekannt</a>. Die Vorträge werden den Veröffentlichungsprozess, eingebettetes
Debian, das Debian-Women-Projekt, den Hurd, Portierungen, Qualitätssicherung
und weitere Themen behandeln.
</p>

<p><strong>Umgang mit fehlenden Abhängigkeiten.</strong> Frank Küster <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01644.html";>fragte
#HK: Debian-Policy übersetzen?
sich</a>, warum das <a href="$(HOME)/doc/debian-policy/">Debian-Policy-Handbuch</a>
bei der Notwendigkeit, Abhängigkeiten auf in den Betreuer-Skripten verwendete
Pakete hinzuzufügen, das Wort »sollte« und nicht »müsse« verwende. John Hasler 
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01669.html";>ergänzte</a>,
dass diese Begriffe verwendet werden, um die Bedeutung der verschiedenen
Richtlinien zu unterscheiden. 
Jeroen van Wolffelaar <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01670.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass die Bedeutung für die Sarge-Veröffentlichung in den <a
href="http://release.debian.org/sarge_rc_policy.txt";>Veröffentlichungsrichtlinien</a>
definiert sei.
</p>

<p><strong>Richtlinien für Bibliotheks-Paketierung.</strong> Pierre Ancelot <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01646.html";>fragte 
sich</a>, warum das <a
href="http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html";>\
Handbuch für Bibliotheks-Paketierung</a> noch nicht in die offizielle <a
href="$(HOME)/doc/developers-reference/">Entwickler-Referenz</a> integriert 
worden sei. Andreas Metzler <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01648.html";>wies</a>
darauf hin, dass es bereits von dort verlinkt sei. Junichi Uekawa <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01746.html";>ergänzte</a>,
dass dieses Dokument eher eine Empfehlung sei, der gefolgt werden solle, solange
es keine guten Argumente dagegen gäbe.
</p>

<p><strong>Übergang MySQL-bezogener Pakete.</strong> Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01757.html";>erörterte</a>
den späten Übergang von Paketen, die gegen MySQL-Bibliotheken linkten. Vorher
hätten der MySQL-Betreuer, die Originalentwickler und andere daran gearbeitet,
die Lizenz zu korrigieren, so dass sie den Anforderungen der Software, die
Debian vertreibe, genüge.  Andreas Metzler <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01774.html";>wies</a>
darauf hin, dass es immer noch ein Lizenzproblem mit Paketen gebe, die auch
gegen die OpenSSL-Bibliothek linkten. Dies scheint allerdings den gesamten
Plan zum <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01777.html";>scheitern</a>
zu bringen.
</p>

<p><strong>Woody auf Sarge Aktualisierung?</strong> Henning Glawe <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01784.html";>bemerkte</a>,
dass zirkuläre Abhängigkeiten eine normale Aktualisierung von Woody auf Sarge
mittels <code>apt-get</code> verhinderten. Die Version in Sarge arbeite daran 
durch Vergrößerung der an <code>dpkg</code> übergebenen Argumentenliste herum. 
Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01821.html";>ergänzte</a>,
dass die Veröffentlichungshinweise <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/aptitude";>aptitude</a> für die Aktualisierung
empföhlen.
</p>

<p><strong>Gettext-Skript in Binärverzeichnis.</strong> Jochen Voss <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01797.html";>bemerkte</a>,
dass das <a href="http://packages.debian.org/gettext";>gettext</a>-Paket eine
Shell-Skript-Komponenten im <code>/usr/bin</code>-Verzeichnis mit entfernten
Ausführungsrechten installiere. In <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/284637";>\
Fehler #284637</a> <a
href="http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=284637&amp;msg=6";>\
erklärte</a> Bruno Haible, dass dies dazu gedacht sei, in Shell-Skripten
eingebunden zu
werden und an diesem Platz installiert werden müsse.  Anthony Towns <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01893.html";>schlug
vor</a>, eine <code>SOURCEPATH</code>-Variable zu den Shells hinzuzufügen.
</p>

<p><strong>Neuer 2005 Debian-Archiv-Schlüssel.</strong> Mehrere Leute 
bemerkten vor kurzem ein Problem mit dem Debian-Archiv-Schlüssel, wie
das <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01843.html";>\
Versagen</a> von <code>apt-secure</code>. Steve Kowalik <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01844.html";>zeigte</a>
#HK: Besser für has been expired?
auf, dass der Archiv-Schlüssel für 2004 ungültig gemacht worden sei und <a
href="http://www.gnupg.org/";>GnuPG</a> offensichtlich versagt habe damit eine
Signatur zu erstellen, was zu leeren Dateien führte.  Anthony Towns <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01898.html";>erzeugte</a>
einen neuen <a href="http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2005.asc";>\
Archivschlüssel</a> und bemerkte, dass Debian bereits vor fast vier Jahren 
damit begonnen habe, eine Signaturkette aufzubauen, aber dies werde immer noch
#HK: Bessere Übersetzung für "mainline software"
nicht vom Großteil der Software in Debian-Unstable unterstützt. 
</p>

<p><strong>Fehlerausmerzparty.</strong> Frank Lichtenheld
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00017.html";>\
kündigte</a> die nächste Fehlerausmerzparty für 4. bis 6. Februar an, die
Koordination erfolge via #debian-bugs auf irc.debian.org. Die Anzahl der
veröffentlichungskritischen
<a href="http://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/";>Fehler</a> liege seit
einigen Tagen um 100. Das Hauptaugenmerk solle auf Paketen liegen, denen
der Lizenztext für die
<a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html";>GNU FDL</a> fehlt, auf
lange ausstehenden und komplexen Fehlern, auf QA-Uploads und der Arbeit
an zuvor entfernten Paketen.</p>

<p><strong>Wunschliste für Vorträge während DebConf 5.</strong> Lars Wirzenius
<a href="http://liw.iki.fi/liw/log/2005-01.html#20050128c";>dachte</a> über
Vorträge nach, die er während der kommenden
<a href="http://www.debconf.org/debconf5";>Debian-Konferenz</a> in Helsinki
im Sommer gerne stattfinden sehe. Unter anderem enthält die Liste sehr
anwendungsbezogene Vorträge wie das Schreiben von guten Handbuchseiten,
erläuternden Einführungen und Dokumentation, die Verwendung von gettext,
das Verstehen von Unicode, das Hinzufügen von Testdatensätzen zu Paketen
und das Identifizieren von Sicherheitsproblemen.</p>

<p><strong>Vorübergehender Ausschluss der mipsel-Architektur.</strong> Steve
Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2005/01/msg00178.html";>\
informierte</a> die Entwickler, dass die <a href="$(HOME)/ports/mips/">\
mipsel-Architektur</a> für den Übergang von Paketen nach Testing ignoriert
werde. Dies sei nur eine vorübergehende Maßnahme um eine Anzahl an 
veröffentlichungskritischen Fehlerkorrekturen nach Testing migrieren zu 
lassen. Die Portierung werde vor der Veröffentlichung eine Möglichkeit 
bekommen aufzuholen.
</p>

<p><strong>Aktualisierungen zur Systemsicherheit.</strong> Die alte Leier!
Wer die folgenden Pakete einsetzt, sollte sie der Sicherheit wegen
auf den neuesten Stand bringen:</p>

und benötigen einen neuen Betreuer. Damit gibt es insgesamt 241 verwaiste
Pakete. Vielen Dank an die bisherigen Betreuer, die ihre Zeit für alle zur
Verfügung gestellt und damit das Konzept »Freie Software« unterstützt haben.

<p>Welcome to this year's 5th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the
Debian community.  Andreas Schuldei <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00014.html";>\
announced</a> that the <a
href="http://comas.linux-aktivaattori.org/debconf5";>registration</a> for this
year's Debian conference has been opened.  Og Maciel <a
href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9516";>installed</a> Debian for
the first time and thought that the expert mode was appropriate, giving him
the opportunity to answer all 27 questions of which only a fraction would be
displayed during a normal installation.</p>

<p><strong>Debian Developer Room at FOSDEM.</strong> Wouter Verhelst <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/2005/01/msg00064.html";>\
announced</a> the talk schedule for the Debian developer room during this
year's <a href="$(HOME)/events/2005/0226-fosdem">FOSDEM</a> taking place at
the end of February.  The talks will cover the release process, embedded
Debian, the Debian Women project, the Hurd, porting, quality assurance and
more.</p>

<p><strong>Dealing with missing Dependencies.</strong> Frank Küster <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01644.html";>wondered</a>
why the <a href="$(HOME)/doc/debian-policy/">Debian policy manual</a> uses the
word "should" and not "must" when it comes to the requirement to add
dependencies to packages which are used in maintainer scripts.  John Hasler <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01669.html";>added</a>
that they are used to distinguish the significance of the various guidelines.
Jeroen van Wolffelaar <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01670.html";>explained</a>
that the significance for the sarge release is defined in the <a
href="http://release.debian.org/sarge_rc_policy.txt";>release policy</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Library Packaging Guideline.</strong> Pierre Ancelot <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01646.html";>wondered</a>
why the <a
href="http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html";>\
library packaging guide</a> is not yet integrated into the official <a
href="$(HOME)/doc/developers-reference/">developers reference</a>.  Andreas
Metzler <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01648.html";>\
pointed out</a> that it is already linked from there.  Junichi Uekawa <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01746.html";>added</a>
that this document is rather a recommendation that should be followed as long
as there are no good arguments against it.</p>

<p><strong>MySQL related Packages Transition.</strong> Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01757.html";>discussed</a>
a late transition of packages linking against MySQL libraries.  Before, the
MySQL maintainer, upstream developers, and others have worked on fixing the
license so that it meets the needs of the software that Debian distributes.
Andreas Metzler <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01774.html";>pointed
out</a> that there is still a license problem with packages that also link to
the OpenSSL library.  This seems to <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01777.html";>break</a>
the whole plan, though.</p>

<p><strong>Woody to Sarge Upgrade?</strong> Henning Glawe <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01784.html";>noticed</a>
that circular dependencies prevent a normal upgrade from woody to sarge using
<code>apt-get</code>.  The version in  sarge works around this by increasing
the length of the argument list fed into <code>dpkg</code>.  Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01821.html";>added</a>
that the release notes recommend to use <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/aptitude";>aptitude</a> for upgrading.</p>

<p><strong>Gettext Script in Binary Directory.</strong> Jochen Voss <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01797.html";>noticed</a>
that the <a href="http://packages.debian.org/gettext";>gettext</a> package
installs a shell script component in the <code>/usr/bin</code> directory with
execute permissions removed.  In <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/284637";>\
Bug#284637</a> Bruno Haible <a
href="http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=284637&amp;msg=6";>\
explains</a> that it is meant to be included in shell scripts and needs to be
installed in this location.  Anthony Towns <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01893.html";>proposed</a>
to add a <code>SOURCEPATH</code> variable to the shells.</p>

<p><strong>New 2005 Debian Archive Key.</strong> Several people noticed a
problem with the Debian archive recently, like <code>apt-secure</code> <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01843.html";>failing</a>.
Steve Kowalik <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01844.html";>revealed</a>
that the archive key for 2004 has been expired and apparently <a
href="http://www.gnupg.org/";>GnuPG</a> failed to create a signature with it
leading to empty files.  Anthony Towns <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg01898.html";>created</a>
a new <a href="http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2005.asc";>archive key</a>
and noted that it's almost four years that Debian started with a signature chain
but it is still not even supported by mainline software in Debian unstable.</p>

<p><strong>Bug Squashing Party.</strong> Frank Lichtenheld <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00017.html";>\
announced</a> the next bug squashing party to take place from February 4th to
6th with coordination in #debian-bugs on irc.debian.org.  The number of
release critical <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/";>bugs</a>
is around 100 for several days already.  Targets will be packages that lack
the license text for the <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html";>GNU
FDL</a>, long-standing and complex bugs, QA uploads and work on removed
packages.</p>

<p><strong>Wishlist for Talks during DebConf 5.</strong> Lars Wirzenius <a
href="http://liw.iki.fi/liw/log/2005-01.html#20050128c";>pondered</a> about
talks he would like to have at the upcoming <a
href="http://www.debconf.org/debconf5";>Debian conference</a> that will take
place in Helsinki in summer.  Among others the list contains very practical
talks like writing good manpages, tutorials and documentation, using gettext,
understanding Unicode, adding test cases to packages, identifying security
problems.</p>

<p><strong>Temporary Exclusion of mipsel Architecture.</strong> Steve Langasek
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2005/01/msg00178.html";>\
informed</a> the developers that the <a href="$(HOME)/ports/mips/">mipsel</a>
architecture will be ignored for the propagation of packages into testing.
This is only a temporary measure in order to let a number of release critical
bugfixes migrate into testing.  The port will have an opportunity to catch up
down before the release.</p>

<p><strong>Security Updates.</strong> You know the drill.  Please make sure
that you update your systems if you have any of these packages installed.</p>
