<p>Welcome to this year's 3rd issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the
Debian community. Roger So sent a <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00008.html";>\
reminder</a> for the Call for Papers for the Asia Debian Mini-Conf taking
place at the end of February in Beijing, China. Jeroen van Wolffelaar compiled
a <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2005/01/msg00040.html";>\
list</a> of packages in contrib which should be forced into the testing stage
of contrib. Ankit Malik listed <a
href="http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/01/06/1557225";>ten
ways</a> to pay back to the Free Software community.</p>
<p><strong>Final DebConf 4 Report.</strong> Pablo Lorenzzoni <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00007.html";>\
announced</a> the <a
href="http://www.debconf.org/debconf4/final-report.html";>final report</a>
about the <a href="$(HOME)/events/2004/0526-debconf">Debian Conference</a>
held last year in Porto Alegre. The report is more a spreadsheet and lists 163
people who have attended this conference representing many teams inside the
Debian project. Several sponsors have made this event possible and the
organisers even document things that can be improved next time.</p>
<p><strong>Development on dpkg.</strong> Scott James Remnant <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00006.html";>\
announced</a> the experimental branch of <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/dpkg";>dpkg</a>. This branch is intended to
see fairly rapid releases incorporating both bug fixes and new
development/features. It may be slightly more unstable than you may be used
to. Development plans are documented in the <a href="http://www.dpkg.org/";>\
dpkg wiki</a>.</p>
<p><strong>New Policy for Debian Consultants.</strong> Tobias Toedter <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2005/01/msg00236.html";>proposed</a>
a new policy regarding the addition of entries to the Debian <a
href="$(HOME)/consultants/">consultants list</a>. The consultants team didn't
reach consensus on which part of the address is mandatory. Additionally, a
discussion came up why Debian is now requiring the consultant to link to the
Debian website as well.</p>
<p><strong>Call for Papers for Mini-DebConf.</strong> Jonathan Oxer <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00003.html";>\
called</a> for speakers for the upcoming Debian Miniconf taking place before
the <a href="http://www.linux.conf.au/";>Linux Conference Australia</a>.
Presentation topics have to be directly related to Debian and be intended for
a technical audience. Presentation slots are 1 hour long with 45 minutes for
presentation, 10 minutes for questions and 5 minutes for speaker changeover. The
format is pretty casual and relaxed though so anything can happen on the
day.</p>
<p><strong>Keeping old Library Versions intact.</strong> Thomas Bushnell <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00623.html";>wondered</a>
how to keep an older library intact but also providing a newer version.
Santiago Vila <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00631.html";>proposed</a>
to upload the old version with a higher version number than the current and
the new version with a new binary name and an adjusted library soname. When
both libraries are compatible, the old <code>-dev</code> package is not
required anymore and the library should go into section oldlibs.</p>
<p><strong>Different Architectures Binary Packages.</strong> Norbert Preining
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00697.html";>\
wondered</a> if there is support for placing binaries of different
architectures in the same Debian package. Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00703.html";>explained</a>
that the proposed location of architecture specific files would even be a
violation of the <a href="http://www.pathname.com/fhs/";>Filesystem Hierarchy
Standard</a> (FHS).</p>
<p><strong>Disabling Daemon Services.</strong> Erik Schanze <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00761.html";>wondered</a>
how to disable the start of daemons so that this setting will be kept upon
upgrades. Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00774.html";>referred</a>
to the <a href="$(HOME)/doc/manuals/securing-debian-howto/ch3.en.html#s3.6">\
Securing Debian Manual</a> where it is explained that you need to leave one
link intact.</p>
<p><strong>Editing History?</strong> Frank Küster <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00790.html";>wondered</a>
if it would be acceptable to add information about closed bugs to older
changelog entries. Jeroen van Wolffelaar <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00791.html";>considered</a>
it fine to correct and improve older items. He <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00800.html";>added</a>
that Branden Robinson improves the changelog file in order to be able to
correctly lookup when a certain bug was fixed.</p>
<p><strong>Essential Packages for Building Packages.</strong> Scott James
Remnant <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00849.html";>\
wondered</a> if <a href="http://packages.debian.org/debhelper";>debhelper</a>
is or rather should be declared build-essential since 92 % of all source
packages declare a build-dependency on it. This could remove a large chunk of
versioned dependencies on one hand, but on the other hand new versioned <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00927.html";>\
dependencies</a> against <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/build-essential";>build-essential</a> would be
introduced when newer versions of <code>debhelper</code> are required for
building.</p>
<p><strong>Turck-MMCache undistributable?</strong> Elizabeth Fong <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00130.html";>sought</a>
advice since Andres Solomon <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/280864";>\
reported</a> Turck-MMCache as undistributable. The software has been
abandoned upstream with an unresponsive developer, but forked. However, its
license (GPL) is not compatible with the license of PHP4 which it needs to be
linked against. In combination this means that Debian can not distribute
binary packages of Turck-MMCache.</p>
<p><strong>License of graphviz.</strong> Somebody <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00297.html";>wondered</a>
why <a href="http://packages.debian.org/graphviz";>graphviz</a> was in non-free
when the <a href="http://www.graphviz.org/License.php";>license</a> on its
homepage was considered free by the <a href="http://www.fsf.org/";>FSF</a> and
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/";>debian-legal</a>. Marco
d'Itri <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00299.html";>\
pointed out</a> that the software has recently been relicensed. Andrew
Suffield <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00394.html";>added</a>
that the new upstream version may go into main.</p>
<p><strong>Debian From Scratch.</strong> Bruce Byfield wrote an <a
href="http://os.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/01/10/1727246";>introduction</a>
to <a href="http://people.debian.org/~jgoerzen/dfs/html/dfs.html";>Debian from
scratch</a> (DFS). It comprises of a bootable CD and the programs to generate
it. By default only core packages are installed. DFS supports most major
file systems, RAID, and LVM2, and includes several partition editors which
make it a useful rescue CD.</p>
<p><strong>Properly Crafting the debian/copyright File.</strong> Jochen Voss
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00488.html";>\
wondered</a> how to properly write the <code>debian/copyright</code> File.
Henning Makholm <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00519.html";>explained</a>
that all authors who claim copyright in a source file should be credited in
the Debian copyright file, together with the exact statement of license they
issued. He added some compression practices to improve the readability of
that file.</p>

erhalten. Er mag etwas instabiler seien als Sie es gewohnt seien. Die
Entwicklungspläne sind im <a href="http://www.dpkg.org/";>Dpkg-Wiki</a>
dokumentiert.

<p><strong>Neue Richtlinie für Debian-Berater.</strong> Tobias Toedter <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2005/01/msg00236.html";>schlug</a>
eine neue Richtlinie bezüglich der Aufnahme von Einträgen in die Debian-<a
href="$(HOME)/consultants/">Beraterliste</a> vor. Das Berater-Team konnte keinen
Konsens über die zwingend vorzuschreibenden Adreßteile erreichen. Zusätzlich
kam eine Diskussion auf, warum Debian nun von den Beratern verlange, die
Debian-Webseite ebenfalls zu verlinken.

<p><strong>Aufruf zu Beiträgen für die Mini-DebConf.</strong> Jonathan Oxer <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/01/msg00003.html";>\
bat</a> um Redner für die kommende Debian-Miniconf, die vor der <a
href="http://www.linux.conf.au/";>Linux Conference Australia</a> stattfinde.
Die Themen der Präsentationen müssen direkt auf Debian bezogen und für ein
technisch-orientiertes Publikum gedacht sein. Der Präsentationszeitrahmen sei
1 Stunde mit 45 Minuten für den Vortrag, 10 Minuten für Fragen und 5 Minuten
für den Wechsel der Vortragenden. Das Format sei allerdings recht locker und
entspannt, daher könne an diesem Tag alles passieren.

<p><strong>Alte Bibliotheksversionen intakt halten.</strong> Thomas Bushnell <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00623.html";>fragte
sich</a>, wie eine alte Bibliotheksversion intakt gehalten, aber auch eine
neuere Version bereitgestellt werden solle.
Santiago Vila <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00631.html";>schlug vor</a>,
die alte Version mit einer höheren Versionsnummer als die aktuelle
und die neue Version mit einem neuen Binärnamen und einem angepaßten
Bibliotheks-SO-Namen hochzuladen. Falls beide Bibliotheken kompatibel seien
würde das alte <code>-dev</code>-Paket nicht mehr benötigt und die Bibliothek
sollte in Bereich »oldlibs« verschoben werden.
</p>
<p><strong>Binärpakete mit verschiedenen Architekturen.</strong> Norbert
Preining <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00697.html";>\
fragte sich</a>, ob es für das Platzieren von Binärprogrammen für verschiedene
Architekturen innerhalb des selben Debian-Pakets unterstützung gebe. Steve
Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00703.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass der vorgeschlagene Ort der architekturspezifischen Dateien soger eine
#HK: Hatten wir Filesystem Hierarchy Standard übersetzt?
Verletzung des <a href="http://www.pathname.com/fhs/";>Filesystem Hierarchy
Standards</a> (FHS) sei.</p>
<p><strong>Deaktiveren von Daemon-Diensten.</strong> Erik Schanze <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00761.html";>fragte</a>
sich, wie man das Starten von Deamons deaktiviere, so dass diese Einstellung
bei Aktualisierungen erhalten bleibe. Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00774.html";>bezog</a>
sich auf die <a
href="$(HOME)/doc/manuals/securing-debian-howto/ch3.en.html#s3.6">\

es als fein ältere Einträge zu korrigieren und verbessern. Er <a

dass Branden Robinson die Changelog-Datei verbessere um in der Lage zu sein,
korrekt nachzuschlagen, wann ein bestimmter Fehler behoben worden sei.

<p><strong>Essentielle Pakete zum Paketbau.</strong> Scott James
Remnant <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00849.html";>\
fragte sich</a>, ob <a href="http://packages.debian.org/debhelper";>debhelper</a>
als »build-essential« erklärt wurde, oder besser werden solle, da 92 %
aller Quellpakete eine Abhängigkeit darauf erklärten. Dies könnte auf der einen
Seite einen großen Batzen an versionierten Abhängigkeiten entfernen, aber auf
der anderen Seite neue versionierte <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/01/msg00927.html";>\
Abhängigkeiten</a> gegen <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/build-essential";>build-essential</a>
wären Notwendig wenn neue Versionen von <code>debhelper</code> zum Bau benötigt

#HK: undistributable besser? vertreiben klingt hier zweideutig
<p><strong>Turck-MMCache unverteilbar?</strong> Elizabeth Fong <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00130.html";>suchte</a>
um Rat da Andres Solomon <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/280864";>\
berichtete</a> das Turck-MMCache nicht verteilbar sei. Die Software wurde von
#HK: Bessere Übersetzungen für diesen Satz *sehr* willkommen!
Ihrem nicht-reagierendem Quellautoren aufgegeben, dann aber abgespalten.
Allerdings ist seine Lizenz (GPL) nicht mit der Lizenz von PHP4, gegen das es
gelinkt werden müsse, kompatibel. Zusammen bedeute dies, dass Debian keine
Binärpakete von Turck-MMCache verteilen könne.

<p><strong>Lizenz von Graphviz.</strong> Jemand <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00297.html";>fragte
sich</a>, warum <a href="http://packages.debian.org/graphviz";>graphviz</a>
nicht-frei sei, wenn die <a
href="http://www.graphviz.org/License.php";>Lizenz</a> auf seiner Homepage
von der <a href="http://www.fsf.org/";>FSF</a> und <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/";>debian-legal</a> als frei angesehen
werde. Marco d'Itri <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00299.html";>wies</a>
darauf hin, dass die Software vor kurzem re-lizenziert worden sei. Andrew

scratch</a> (DFS). Es bestehe aus einer bootbaren CD und den Programmen, es zu
Erstellen. Standardmäßig werden nur Kernpakete installiert. DFS unterstütze
die meisten großen Dateisysteme, RAID und LVM2, und enthalte mehrere
Partitionseditoren, weshalb es sinnvoll als Rettungs-CD einsetzbar sei.

<p><strong>Richtiges Erstellen der debbian/copyright-Datei.</strong> Jochen Voss
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00488.html";>fragte
sich</a>, wie er die <code>debian/copyright</code>-Datei richtig erstelle.
Henning Makholm <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00519.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass alle Autoren die in einer Quelldatei ihr Urheberrecht erklärten in der
#HK: Ggf. to give credit besser
Debian copyright-Datei genannt werden sollten, zusammen mit der genauen von
ihnen genannten Lizenzerklärung. Er ergänzte einige Kompressionspraktiken um
die Lesbarkeit dieser Datei zu verbessern.
