Summary about Linux Kernel Packages in sarge

Unfortunately a lot of vulnerabilities are discovered in the Linux Kernel. In terms of improving security this is a good thing. However, it places a lot of burdon on the security team and the kernel maintainers, since patches have to be backported and packages prepared.

Fortunately the situation in sarge has been improved a lot compared to woody since the number of different kernel source packages has been reduced to only two (compared to 8 in woody). This simplifies kernel maintenance a lot, although it is still a lot of work.

As shown with the first update, a lot of coordination and testing is required to get a kernel update out of the door. However, with more practice this will probably process faster in the future.

The table below is intended to help me keep track of kernel updates in the sarge distribution.
