The Debian project reaffirms its dedication to providing a 100% free system to our users according to our Social Contract and the DFSG. All works made available in Debian main will remain available in source and binary form under licenses that permit modification and make such modifications practical. We encourage authors of all works to use such a license to free their work. However for the purpose of shipping necessary software that is not run on a computer's main CPU and instead drives auxiliary processors not capable of running Debian themselves, a new component called «firmware» is instated to hold such software. Packages in this component do not need to abide to DFSG #2. All other points still need to be satisfied. Firmware satisfying all points of the DFSG is free to be placed in Debian main. Furthermore, the Debian project resolves that software included in this additional component can be included on the official install media. A notice stating that non-DFSG compliant firmware has been used and will be installed onto the resulting system will be displayed during installation.
