Debian as a global project

FOSSASIA Summit, 13. March 2025

Debian is one of the oldest and most respected GNU/Linux distributions, built entirely by a global community of volunteers. Despite its global reach, the Debian community sees disproportionate representation across regions. Asia, a hub of innovation and diversity, remains underrepresented in this project.

This talk introduces Debian’s principles, its unique organizational structure, and the many ways to join and contribute to the project. Whether you are a developer, translator, designer, or advocate, Debian offers countless opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

I believe Debian is more than just a technical project—it is an inviting and diverse community where people come together, united by a shared commitment to Free Software. My experience has shown me how Debian fosters not just innovation, but meaningful connections and collaboration that extend well beyond coding. I look forward to sharing how you can become part of this global effort.
