<p>Willkommen zur 48. Ausgabe der DWN in diesem Jahr, dem wöchentlichen
Newsletter der Debian-Gemeinschaft. Frank Ronneburg hat sein <a
href="http://debiananwenderhandbuch.de/";>Buch</a> über Debian aktualisiert,
damit es die bevorstehende Veröffentlichung von Sarge berücksichtigt und
er wird es am 14. Dezember in Berlin, Deutschland, <a
href="http://www.lob.de/cgi-bin/work/pages?id=Dvj09C3PcRVB&page=Bernd1";>präsentieren</a>.
<a href="http://www.europcar.com/";>Europcar</a> hat seine 1500 Computer in den
#HK: Thin-Clients übersetzen?
Zweigstellen auf Debian basierte »Thin-Clients« <a
href="http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/linuxunix/0,39020390,39175484,00.htm";>\
umgestellt</a> und transferiert nun 3500 weitere Maschinen in der Zentrale
auf GNU/Linux.</p>

<p><strong>Hot Babe und Non-US?</strong> Nachdem Thibaut Varene seine Absicht,
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00986.html";>bekanntgab</a>,
<a href="http://dindinx.net/hotbabe/";>hot babe</a>, eine kleine Anwendung, die
Abbildungen (eines gezeichneten Mädchens) abhängig von der CPU-Temperatur
zeigt, begann eine Diskussion darüber, welche Pakete Teil von Debian sein
sollten. Die Frage kam auf, wie mit Paketen umgegangen werden solle, die gegen
das Recht in einigen Ländern verstießen. Paul Hampson <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg01042.html";>fragte</a>
sich, ob non-US für solche Pakete reaktiviert werden solle.

<p><strong>Sarge-Veröffentlichung: Aktualisierung.</strong> Andreas Barth
schickte einen weiteren <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2004/11/msg00015.html";>\
Statusbericht</a> über den Fortschritt bei der Sarge-Veröffentlichung ein. Er
berichtete, dass GNOME 2.8 akzeptiert worden sei während KDE 3.3 noch Probleme
habe, die gelöst werden müssten, bevor über die Hinzufügung diskutiert werden
könne. Der Hauptblockierer der Veröffentlichung sei aber immer noch die
fehlende Infrastruktur.

<p><strong>Paketliste über LDAP.</strong> Sean Finney <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/12/msg00290.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass er an einer alternativen Paketliststruktur gearbeitet habe, die das <a
href="http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/29.html";>Lightweight Directory
Access Protocol</a> (LDAP) verwende. Anwendungen von Suchfiltern auf <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/12/msg00329.html";>Zeitstempel</a>
würde die Aktualisierung der Paketliste deutlich beschleunigen, aber
<code>apt</code> ist derzeit mit der Annahme entwickelt, dass die Paketliste
in der gleichen Art und Weise wie die Pakete selber geholt würden.

<p><strong>Ist Sarge wirklich wichtig?</strong> Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier <a
href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/index.php?p=56";>fragte</a> sich, ob
#HK: Wörtliche Übersetzung: als öffentliche Veröffentlichung veröffentliche
# ggf. besser übersetzen bzw. bei Kurzfassung bleiben.
es wirklich wichtig sei ob und wann Debian die Sarge-Distribution veröffentliche.
Er ergänzte, dass das offizielle Veröffentlichungsdatum wirklich nichts
bedeute, da Sarge bereits weitverbreitet benutzt werde. Er betonte einen der
schönen Punkte über Freie Software, nämlich die sofortige Verfügbarkeit.
Andreas Barth <a href="http://blogs.turmzimmer.net/2004/12/06#why-release";>\
antwortete</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Voreinstellungs-URL via DHCP.</strong> Joey Hess <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01525.html";>bemerkte</a>,
dass der Raum für Kernel-Boot-Parameter auf HPPA zu begrenzt sei um eine
Voreinstellungs-URL für Debconf und den <a
href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">Debian-Installer</a> bereitzustellen.
Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01532.html";>ergänzte</a>,
dass der DHCP-Server in der Lage sei zwischen Klassen zu unterscheiden, was
es ermöglichen würde, eine häufige Option zu <a

überladen</a>.

<p><strong>Neuer Debian-Installer-Zweig.</strong> Joey Hess <a

verkündete</a>, dass er einen speziellen Entwicklungszweig angelegt habe,
den der Debian-Installer für Sarge verwenden werde. Der Hauptarm ist nun
offen für Post-Sarge Änderungen. Das bedeute, dass der Installer für Sarge
nun mehr oder weniger eingefroren sei. Christian Perrier <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01347.html";>drängte</a>
die Entwickler ergänzend darauf hin, Änderungen an Zeichenketten zu vermeiden.

<p><strong>»Alternatives« für su-nach-root?</strong> Grant Diffey <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00728.html";>schlug</a>
vor, den »Alternatives«-Mechanismus für Programme zu verwenden, die
su-nach-root-Funktionalität bereitstellten. Nikita Youshchenko <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00735.html";>erklärte</a>,
dass die von ihm aufgelistete Programme verschiedene Dinge täten. Wouter
Verhelst <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/mail2.html";>ergänzte</a>
sogar, dass die Tatsache, das <code>gksu</code> aus dem Menüsystem anstatt von
<code>gksudo</code> verwendet werde bedeute, dass <code>sudo</code> in
graphischen Umgebungen nicht bequem verwendet werden könne.

<p>Welcome to this year's 48th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the
Debian community. Frank Ronneburg has updated his <a
href="http://debiananwenderhandbuch.de/";>book</a> about Debian to cover the
upcoming release of sarge and will <a
href="http://www.lob.de/cgi-bin/work/pages?id=Dvj09C3PcRVB&page=Bernd1";>present</a>
it on December 14th in Berlin, Germany. <a href="http://www.europcar.com/";>\
Europcar</a> has <a
href="http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/linuxunix/0,39020390,39175484,00.htm";>\
switched</a> 1,500 computers in branch offices to Debian based thin clients,
and is now moving 3,500 more machines in headquaters to GNU/Linux.</p>

<p><strong>Hot Babe and non-US?</strong> After Thibaut Varene <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00986.html";>declared</a>
his intention to package <a href="http://dindinx.net/hotbabe/";>hot babe</a>, a
small application showing different pictures (of a drawn girl) depending on
the CPU temperature, a discussion about which packages should be part of
Debian started. The question came up how to handle packages that are against
the law in some countries. Paul Hampson <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg01042.html";>wondered</a>
if non-US should be reactivated for such packages.</p>
<p><strong>Sarge Release Update.</strong> Andreas Barth sent in another <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2004/11/msg00015.html";>\
status report</a> about the sarge release progress. He reported that GNOME
2.8 was accepted while KDE 3.3 still has issues that need to be resolved
before its addition can be discussed. The main blocker of the release is
still missing infrastructure, though.</p>

<p><strong>Package Lists via LDAP.</strong> Sean Finney <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/12/msg00290.html";>stated</a>
he as
worked on implementing a alternative package list structure using the <a
href="http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/29.html";>Lightweight Directory
Access Protocol</a> (LDAP). Applying search filters on <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/12/msg00329.html";>timestamps</a>
would make package list updates a lot faster faster, but <code>apt</code> is
currently designed with the assumption that it fetches the list of packages
in the same manner that it fetches the packages themselves.</p>
<p><strong>Does Sarge really matter?</strong> Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier <a
href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/index.php?p=56";>wondered</a> if it
really matters whether or when Debian releases the sarge distribution as
official release. He added that the official release date doesn't really mean
anything, since sarge is already widely in use. He emphasises on one of the
nice things about Free Software which is immediate availability. Andreas
Barth <a href="http://blogs.turmzimmer.net/2004/12/06#why-release";>\
responded</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Preseed URL via DHCP.</strong> Joey Hess <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01525.html";>noticed</a>
that the kernel boot parameter space is too limited on HPPA to provide a
preseed URL for Debconf and <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">\
debian-installer</a>. Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01532.html";>added</a>
that the DHCP server is able to distinguish between classes which would make
it possible to <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01543.html";>\
overload</a> a common option.</p>
<p><strong>New Debian-Installer Branch.</strong> Joey Hess <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01344.html";>\
announced</a> that he has created a special development branch for the
debian-installer sarge will use. The main trunk is now open for post-sarge
changes. This means that the installer for sarge is more or less frozen.
Christian Perrier additionally <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01347.html";>urged</a>
developers to avoid string changes.</p>
<p><strong>Alternatives for su-to-root?</strong> Grant Diffey <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00728.html";>proposed</a>
to use the alternatives mechanism for programs that provide su-to-root
functionality. Nikita Youshchenko <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00735.html";>asserted</a>
that the programs he listed do different things. Wouter Verhelst even <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/mail2.html";>added</a> that
the fact that <code>gksu</code> is used from the menu system instead of
<code>gksudo</code>, means that one cannot conveniently use <code>sudo</code>
in graphical environments.</p>
