<p>Willkommen zur 29. Ausgabe der DWN in diesem Jahr, dem wöchentlichen
Newsletter der Debian-Gemeinschaft. Pablo Lorenzzoni <a
href="http://hackers.propus.com.br/~pablo/blog/?id=34";>berichtete</a>, dass die
<a href="http://www.debian-br.org/";>Brasilianische Debian-Gemeinschaft</a> sich
entschlossen habe, ein riesige brasilien-weite Party zum 11ten Geburtstag von
Debian am 21. August abzuhalten.</p>
<p><strong>Neuer Lizenztest.</strong> Branden Robinson und Matthew Palmer <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/07/msg00097.html";>\
entwickelten</a> den Diktatortest, der die Fähigkeit habe zu bestimmen, ob eine
Lizenz verträglich mit den <a href="$(HOME)/social_contract#guidelines">Debian
Richtlinien für Freie Software</a> sei. Eine Lizenz sei nicht frei, wenn
sie Tätigkeiten verbiete, die — im Nichtvorliegen der Zustimmung zur Lizenz —
vom Kopierschutz oder anderen anwendbaren Rechtsgrundlagen erlaubt wären.</p>

<p><strong>Neues von Java in Main.</strong> Arnaud Vandyck <a
href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/avdyk/4713.html";>berichtete</a>, dass
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/kaffe";>kaffe</a> vor kurzem in Testing
gekommen sei. Viel Arbeit bei der <a
href="http://java.debian.net/index.php/MovingJavaToMain";>Verschiebung von Java
nach Main</a> sei in das Bauen dieser Java-Pakete mit Kaffe gesteckt worden. Eine
andere gute Nachricht sei, dass viele dieser Pakete mit <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/sablevm";>SableVM</a> gebaut werden könnten,
das ebenfalls in Testing sei.</p>
<p><strong>Vorgeschlagener Allgemeiner Beschluss: AMD64 in Debian zwingen.</strong>
Manoj Srivastava <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00341.html";>eröffnete</a>
die Vorschlags- und Abänderungsdiskussionsperiode für den Allgemeinen
Beschluß-Vorschlag von Josselin Mouette um die reinen AMD64-Portierung in Sarge
und Sid zu erzwingen. Da allerdings Chris Cheney seine Unterstützung für den
<a href="$(HOME)/vote/2004/vote_005">Vorschlag</a> <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00344.html";>aufgehoben</a>
hat, <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00349.html";>fehlen</a>

genug Unterstützer. Der Projektleiter <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00355.html";>merkte</a>
#HK: Im Original ist hier AMD64 komplett klein geschrieben, ggf. ändern
auch an, dass es unter den AMD64-Portierungspersonen keinerlei Übereinstimmung
über die Aufnahme in Sarge gebe.</p>

<p><strong>Leichtgewichtiger GNU/Linux Desktop.</strong> Knut Yrvin <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2004/07/msg00170.html";>zitierte</a> einen
<a href="http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1624113,00.asp";>Artikel</a>
aus der eWeek, in der Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols über leichtgewichtige Zugänge
zum GNU/Linux Desktop berichte, z.B. eine GNU/Linux »Thin-Client«-Lösung mittels
<a href="http://ltsp.sourceforge.net/";>LTSP</a> (Linux Terminal Server Project).
Um LTSP vernünftig ohne Expertise im eigenen Haus einzusetzen, könne man Skolelinux
#HK: Ggf. properly besser übersetzen
verwenden, das für Schulen mit minimalen Resourcen in jedem Sinne des Wortes
entwickelt worden sei.</p>
<p><strong>Neues Debtags-Alioth Projekt.</strong>
Angesichts des wachsenden Interesses an Debtags hat Enrico Zini die Debtags-Entwicklung
von Deb-Usability in ein eigenes Alioth-<a
href="http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/";>Projekt</a> <a
href="http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/debtags-devel/2004-July/000000.html";>\
ausgegliedert</a>. Mit dieser Ausgliederung ist neue Infrastruktur für die
Entwickler hinzugekommen, u.A. einer <a
href="http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/debtags-devel";>Mailingliste</a>
für die Entwickler, die Interesse an der Teilnahme oder des Einbaus von
<a href="http://svn.debian.org/viewcvs/debtags";>debtags</a> in ihre eigenen Projekte
haben.</p>
<p><strong>Debian-Stand Erscheinungs-Charta.</strong> Alexander Schmehl <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/2004/06/msg00094.html";>fasste</a>
den recht erfolgreichen Auftritt auf dem diesjährigen
<a href="http://www.linuxtag.org/";>LinuxTag</a> zusammen. Er beschrieb mehrere
Punkte die Probleme verursachten oder unangenehm waren und daher im nächsten
Jahr verbessert werden sollten. Die Diskussion ist nicht nur auf den Auftritt
auf dem Linuxtag begrenzt, daher ist jeder eingeladen an ihr <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/";>teilzunehmen</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Das Veröffentlichungsproblem.</strong> Joey Hess <a
href="http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/the_release_problem-2004-07-22-23-23.html";>\
beschwerte</a> sich, dass das <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">\
Debian-Installer</a>-Team die allgemeinen Probleme in der Leitung der
Veröffentlichung im kleinen erlebe die Debian als gesamtes habe. Er berichtete
#HK: Ggf. besser übersetzen; Management unübersetzt lassen?
über einen Freeze der Zeichenketten, der sich stattdessen in einen Wasserfall von
neuen Zeichenketten gewandelt, der zudem alles mögliche beschädigt habe. Diese
Verhalten sei allerdings ganz natürlich.</p>
<p><strong>Sarge Veröffentlichungs-Status.</strong> Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2004/07/msg00016.html";>\
verkündete</a>, dass das Release-Team hart an der Fertigstellung eines
realisierbaren Veröffentlichungsplans gearbeitet habe. Mit der Veröffentlichung
des zweiten Testkandidaten des Debian-Installers Anfang August werde ein festes
Ziel für diesen benötigt. Daher werden beginnen mit dem 31. Juli für Pakete der
Priorität Standard oder höher nur noch veröffentlichungskritische Änderungen
nach Testing erlaubt.</a>
<p><strong>Neue Kryptobibliothek für Sarge?</strong> Matthias Urlichs <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/07/msg00075.html";>wollte</a>
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/libgcrypt11";>gcrypt</a> und <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/gnutls10";>gnutls</a> auf die neuste Version
aktualisieren, insbesondere da die Ursprungsentwickler darum gebeten hatten.
Dies würde allerdings die Abhängigkeiten für den <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">\
Debian-Installer</a> ändern. Ray Dassen <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/07/msg00076.html";>erinnerte</a>
ihn an das Fiasco in Zusammenhang mit der letzten Aktualisierung, aber Andreas Metzler <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/07/msg00077.html";>erklärte</a>
warum diese Aktualisierung reibungsloser sein werde.
Steve Langasek <a

allerdings fest, das das Paket in Unstable vorhanden sein müsse und

<a href="http://www.debian-br.org/";>Brazilian Debian community</a> has decided
to celebrate a huge nation-wide party on August 21st for Debian's 11th
birthday.</p>
<p><strong>New License Test.</strong> Branden Robinson and Matthew Palmer <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/07/msg00097.html";>\
developed</a> the Dictator Test, which has the ability to determine if a
license is not compliant with the <a
href="$(HOME)/social_contract#guidelines">Debian Free Software Guidelines</a>.
A licence is not Free if it prohibits actions which, in the absence of
acceptance of the licence, would be allowed by copyright or other applicable
laws.</p>
<p><strong>Update on Java in Main.</strong> Arnaud Vandyck <a
href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/avdyk/4713.html";>reported</a> that <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/kaffe";>kaffe</a> has entered testing
recently. A lot of the effort of <a
href="http://java.debian.net/index.php/MovingJavaToMain";>moving Java into
main</a> was based on building these Java packages with Kaffe. Another good
news is that a lot of these packages can now be build with <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/sablevm";>SableVM</a>, which is also in
testing.</p>
<p><strong>Proposed General Resolution: Force AMD64 into Debian.</strong>
Manoj Srivastava <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00341.html";>opened</a>
the proposal and amendment discussion period for the general resolution
proposed by Josselin Mouette to force the pure AMD64 port into sarge and sid.
However, with Chris Cheney <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00344.html";>rescinding</a>
his second the <a href="$(HOME)/vote/2004/vote_005">proposal</a>
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00349.html";>lacks</a>
enough sponsors. The project leader also <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2004/07/msg00355.html";>noted</a>
that there is no agreement at all among the amd64 porters concerning the
inclusion in sarge.</p>
<p><strong>Lightweight GNU/Linux Desktop.</strong> Knut Yrvin <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2004/07/msg00170.html";>cited</a> an
<a href="http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1624113,00.asp";>article</a> from
eWeek in which Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols reports about lightweight approaches
to the GNU/Linux desktop, i.e. a GNU/Linux thin-client solution with <a
href="http://ltsp.sourceforge.net/";>LTSP</a> (Linux Terminal Server Project).
To deploy LTSP properly without expertise in the house one can use Skolelinux,
which was designed for school use with minimal resources in every sense of the
word.</p>

<p><strong>New debtags Alioth Project created.</strong>
Given the raise of interest grown around debtags, Enrico Zini <a
href="http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/debtags-devel/2004-July/000000.html";>\
spun</a> debtags development from Deb-Usability into an Alioth <a
href="http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/";>project</a> of its
own. With the spin off, new infrastructure has been added including
a developers <a
href="http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/debtags-devel";>mailing
list</a> for developers interested in contributing
or integrating <a href="http://svn.debian.org/viewcvs/debtags";>debtags</a> in
their own projects.</p>
<p><strong>Debian Booth Appearance Charter.</strong> Alexander Schmehl <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/2004/06/msg00094.html";>resumed</a>
the presence at this year's <a href="http://www.linuxtag.org/";>LinuxTag</a>
which was quite successful. He described several issues that caused problems
or were nasty and therefore should be done better next year. This discussion
is not limited to the presence at LinuxTag, so everybody is invited to <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/";>join</a> it.</p>
<p><strong>The Release Problem.</strong> Joey Hess <a
href="http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/the_release_problem-2004-07-22-23-23.html";>\
complained</a> that the <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">\
debian-installer</a> team experiences problems that Debian has in overall
release management in Debian, in miniature. He reported about a string freeze
that was turned into a waterfall of new strings instead which also broke all
kinds of stuff. This behaviour is quite natural, though.</p>
<p><strong>Sarge Release Status.</strong> Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2004/07/msg00016.html";>\
announced</a> the release team has been hard at work on finalising a viable
release schedule. With the release of debian-installer's second test
candidate at the beginning of August, there is a need to provide a fixed
target for them. Hence, starting 31 July, no more non-RC changes are allowed
into testing for base packages or for packages of priority standard and
higher.</p>
<p><strong>New Crypto Library for Sarge?</strong> Matthias Urlichs <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/07/msg00075.html";>wanted</a>
to update <a href="http://packages.debian.org/libgcrypt11";>gcrypt</a> and <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/gnutls10";>gnutls</a> to the current version,
especially since the upstream developers have requested this. This would
alter the dependencies for the <a href="$(HOME)/devel/debian-installer/">\
debian-installer</a>, though. Ray Dassen <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/07/msg00076.html";>reminded</a>
him of the fiasco in connection with the last upgrade, but Andreas Metzler <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/07/msg00077.html";>explained</a>
