<p>Welcome to this year's 43rd issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the
Debian community. Jörg Jaspert <a href="http://ganneff.de/blog/2005/10/23";>\
noticed</a> that the rate of package <a
href="http://ftp-master.debian.org/REJECT-FAQ.html";>rejections</a> out of the
NEW queue is rising, mostly due to incomplete <code>copyright</code> files and
suggested to investigate the included files before the upload. Debian users
in Japan will hold Debian <a href="$(HOME)/events/2005/1028-jdmc">mini
conference</a> in Osaka, Japan at the coming weekend (28th and 29th of
October).</p>
<p><strong>Etch Veröffentlichungs-Fortschritt.</strong> Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/10/msg00004.html";>\
bedankte</a> sich bei all denen, die große Mengen an Zeit für die <a
href="$(HOME)/releases/sarge/">Sarge</a>-Veröffentlichung aufgewendet hätten,
und schlug einen Zeitplan für die Veröffentlichung von <a
href="$(HOME)/releases/etch/">Etch</a> vor. Dieser erlaube einen ersten
Freeze der Werkzeugkette (engl. Toolchain) und des Kernels im Juli und einen

<p><strong>Etch Release Progress.</strong> Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/10/msg00004.html";>\
thanked</a> those who have spent large amounts of time for <a
href="$(HOME)/releases/sarge/">sarge</a> release and proposed a timeline for
the release of <a href="$(HOME)/releases/etch/">etch</a>. This allows for the
first freeze of the toolchain and kernel in July and a general freeze in
October. Meeting these milestones would then lead to a <a
href="http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt";>release</a> of etch in
December 2006.</p>

that some network ports get assigned dynamically during the boot process and
sometimes clash with daemons that use fixed ports. Javier Fernández-Sanguino
Peña <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01071.html";>\
explained</a> that the assignment happens inside the GNU C library and <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01148.html";>started</a>
the <code>portsreserve</code> package to prevent such cases.</p>
<p><strong>Voreinstellung für den lokalen Rechnernamen.</strong> Christoph
Haas <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01063.html";>\
entdeckte</a>, dass der lokale Rechnername nach der Installation auf
<code>localhost.localdomain</code> statt einfach <code>localhost</code>
gesetzt sei. Joey Hess

<p><strong>Default local Hostname.</strong> Christoph Haas <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01063.html";>discovered</a>
that the local hostname after the installation defaults to
<code>localhost.localdomain</code> instead of just <code>localhost</code>.
Joey Hess <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00254.html";>\
explained</a> that the configuration has already been changed after the sarge
release in reaction to Bug#<a href="http://bugs.debian.org/247734";>\
247734</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Pluszeichen in Paketnamen.</strong> Andres Salomon <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01290.html";>\
beabsichtigte</a>, die Binärpakete des Pakets <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/src:mysql++";>mysql++</a> von <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/libsqlplus1";>libsqlplus1</a> zu <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/libmysql++2";>libmysql++</a> umzubenennen, da
mehrere Benutzer vom ersteren Namen verwirrt seien und sich fragten, ob die
Pluszeichen ein Problem für die Paketwerkzeuge darstellen würden. Henning
Glawe <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00081.html";>\
stellte klar</a>, dass das Pluszeichen eine spezielle Bedeutung für
<code>apt-get</code> habe, aber Henning Makholm

angehängt werde.</p>
<p><strong>Plus Signs in Package Names.</strong> Andres Salomon <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01290.html";>\
intended</a> to rename the binary packages of <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/src:mysql++";>mysql++</a> package from <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/libsqlplus1";>libsqlplus1</a> to <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/libmysql++2";>libmysql++</a> since several
users were confused by the older name and wondered if the plus signs could
pose a problem for the packaging tools. Henning Glawe <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00081.html";>pointed
out</a> that the plus sign has a special meaning for <code>apt-get</code> but
Henning Makholm <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00083.html";>added</a>
that this doesn't matter here since the soname will have to be added to it
anyway.</p>
<p><strong>Namensgebung für S-Lang-Module.</strong> Rafael Laboissiere <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01291.html";>\
bemerkte</a>, dass es zurzeit keine Richtlinie über die Benennung von
S-Lang-Modulen gebe. Anwendungen wie
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/slsh";>slsh</a> oder
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/slrn";>slrn</a> ist ein Präfix
<q><code>sl</code></q> vorangestellt, während Module für andere Sprachen den
vollen Namen der Sprache im Paketnamen verwendeten. Er <a

<p><strong>S-Lang Module Naming.</strong> Rafael Laboissiere <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01291.html";>noted</a>
that there is currently no policy about naming S-Lang modules. Applications
such as <a href="http://packages.debian.org/slsh";>slsh</a> or <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/slrn";>slrn</a> are prefixed with
"<code>sl</code>" while modules for other languages use the full name of the
language in the package name. He <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01309.html";>\
acknowledged</a> to rename the package to <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/slang-gdbm";>slang-gdbm</a> as this module is
#FIXME: Append: ... "than for gdbm developers". oder "more interesting" umformulieren
more interesting for S-Lang developers.</p>
<p><strong>Pbuilder-Statusaktualisierung.</strong> Junichi Uekawa

<p><strong>Pbuilder Status Update.</strong> Junichi Uekawa (上川 純一)

that he has moved the development to <a
href="http://alioth.debian.org/projects/pbuilder";>Alioth</a> as a preparation
for team maintenance and switched to <a
href="http://packages.debian.org/cdebootstrap";>cdebootstrap</a>. For several
distributions dependencies are not <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01450.html";>resolved</a>
with regards to priorities, though. They could be adjusted <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00035.html";>en bloc</a>
or <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00052.html";>\
during</a> the entire development cycle before the release.</p>
<p><strong>Vorgeschlagener teTeX-Übergang.</strong> Frank Küster
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01349.html";>fragte
sich</a>, ob es eine Möglichkeit gäbe, einen normalen Übergang für
teTeX-Pakete zu vermeiden, da die neue Version 3.0 in Unstable verfügbar
sein solle, aber Veröffentlichungsmanager ihn gebeten hätten, zurzeit nicht
einen anderen Versionssprung zu starten. Andreas Barth

<p><strong>Proposed teTeX Transition.</strong> Frank Küster <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01349.html";>wondered</a>
if there is a possibility to prevent a normal transition for teTeX packages
since the new version 3.0 should be available in unstable but release managers
have asked him not to start another transition at the moment. Andreas Barth
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01353.html";>\
agreed</a> that providing the old library version for a while would help and
not block packages as usual.</p>
<p><strong>Neue uClibc-Portierungen.</strong> Daniel Ruoso ist
an einer i386-Portierung von Debian basierend auf der uClibc statt der GNU
C-Bibliothek für ältere und langsamere Hardware

exchange only a small set of packages with their uClibc versions. Riku Voipio

pointed</a> to the <a href="http://people.debian.org/~andersee/uwoody/";>\
woody</a> port using uClibc.</p>
<p><strong>cURL-Statusaktualisierung.</strong> Domenico Andreoli
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01389.html";>\
aktualisierte</a> das Paket cURL in Experimental, so dass eine Version gegen
OpenSSL und eine andere gegen GNU TLS linke. Dies werde Lizenzprobleme mit
unter der <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html";>GNU GPL</a>
veröffentlichten Anwendungen korrigieren, die indirekt gegen OpenSSL gelinkt
würden.</p>
<p><strong>cURL Status Update.</strong> Domenico Andreoli <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01389.html";>updated</a>
the cURL package in the experimental suite so that one variant is linked
against OpenSSL and another is linked against GNU TLS. This will fix license
problems with applications released under the <a
href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html";>GNU GPL</a> that are indirectly
linked against OpenSSL.</p>
<p><strong>PHP-Lizenz für PEAR-Pakete?</strong> Piotr Roszatycki
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00122.html";>fragte
sich</a>, wie mit Paketen im Debian-Archiv umzugehen sei, die die
<a href="http://www.php.net/license/2_02.txt";>PHP</a>-<a
href="http://www.php.net/license/3_0.txt";>Lizenz</a> für etwas, das nicht PHP
selbst sei, verwenden, da ein solches Paket nicht zum Archiv zugelassen worden

<p><strong>PHP License for PEAR Packages?</strong> Piotr Roszatycki <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00122.html";>wondered</a>
how to handle packages in the Debian archive that use the <a
href="http://www.php.net/license/2_02.txt";>PHP</a> <a
href="http://www.php.net/license/3_0.txt";>license</a> for something that is
not PHP itself since one such package was rejected from the archive. Jörg
Jaspert <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/08/msg00128.html";>\
pointed out</a> that the license isn't suited for modules and applications
written in or for PHP but only for the core PHP language itself.</p>
<p><strong>Neue Quell- und Binärpakete.</strong> Frank Küster
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00153.html";>\
bemerkte</a>, dass ein neues Quellpaket, welches bestehende Binärpakete
anbiete, den NEW-Prozess nicht durchlaufen müsse. Auf diese Weise würden
versehentlich überschriebene Binärpakete nicht bemerkt, bevor sie das
Archiv erreichten. Jeroen van Wolffelaar

<p><strong>New Source Packages and Binaries.</strong> Frank Küster <a

that a new source package that provides existing binary package does not have
to go through NEW processing. This way accidently overwritten binary packages
won't get noticed before they reach the archive. Jeroen van Wolffelaar <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/10/msg00187.html";>explained</a>
that this will soon change.</p>
